Manchester United could repeat £20m Man City transfer trick next summer on one condition
Had you missed the news on Wednesday afternoon, you would have been forgiven for questioning Joe Hugill’s omission from Manchester United’s squad for their pre-season tour of the United States.
It was revealed by the Manchester Evening News shortly before 2pm that Hugill was joining Wigan Athletic on loan for the 2024/25 season. The deal was confirmed by the League One side the following day.
Fresh from scoring in United’s 2-0 win over Rangers last weekend, the 20-year-old was poised to be included in the squad that has since travelled across the Atlantic. Instead, his name was removed from the booking.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s influence in United training is clear With Joshua Zirkzee still away after representing the Netherlands at the European Championship, Hugill would have been a useful inclusion. Rasmus Hojlund and Ethan Wheatley are the only centre-forwards who have travelled to the US.
Nevertheless, it will be reassuring for Hugill that his immediate future has been sorted early. Despite being highly thought of by those at United, he was unlikely to be a first-team regular this term. He has never made a competitive appearance for the club and Zirkzee’s addition to the squad has pushed him further down the pecking order. It is a move that suits all parties.
