What Marc Guehi did after finding out Newcastle United wanted to sign him

Marc Guehi to Newcastle United looks like it could be a goer.

The Magpies have stepped up their search for a centre-back in recent weeks, and now look likely to land Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

Malick Thiaw had been the top target, with Newcastle United holding talks with the 22-year-old’s agent. Eddie Howe even spoke glowingly about Thiaw in an interview.

That hinted that a deal was not far away, but it is now Guehi who is at the front of the queue to arrive at St James’ Park.

Newcastle’s initial move for Guehi emerged last week, and the noises have been fairly positive ever since. While Newcastle were fearful that their Guehi bid could be hijacked, that has not happened as of yet.

In fact, Newcastle are becoming more confident about signing Guehi.

There is now a lot of hope that a deal can be completed to sign the 24-year-old from Crystal Palace. And a fresh update from the Telegraph shows how eager the defender is to make the move.

According to the Telegraph, Guehi is ‘very keen’ to sign for Newcastle United after learning about the Magpies’ interest, and has ‘urged’ his representatives to make the deal become a reality.

They add that progress has been made during negotiations, with a deal set to be finalised ahead of the upcoming weekend.

The Telegraph also state that Newcastle have not shown any less willingness after discovering Crystal Palace’s asking price, with a deal worth more than £60million now close.

The fact that Guehi is so eager to sign for Newcastle United is a testament to the club’s stature and ambition.

This is a player whose stock has never been higher. He was exceptional at Euro 2024, proving to be England’s best player as the Three Lions made it all the way to the final.

And at the age of 24, there is still so much more to come. Guehi has already established himself as a top class Premier League centre-back, and he can go on to achieve even more in the black and white of Newcastle.

It will be a real statement signing if Newcastle can get a deal done, and they are working towards that end. Confidence is increasing, as we edge closer to seeing Guehi arrive on Tyneside.
