Steve Evans’ side have so far signed 13 players, bringing in experienced heads such as Jonson Clarke-Harris and Sean Raggett.
The Millers are now looking towards Yorkshire journeyman Malik Wilks to help strengthen their squad further, who would come in with over 100 League One appearances to his name.
How did Wilks fare last season?The 25-year-old struggled to make an impact last season under Danny Rohl, rarely making an appearance for the Owls in what could be considered a miracle campaign for Wednesday, surviving relegation late on and finishing 20th.
Wilks made only 15 appearances in the Championship, with only one start, contributing no goal contributions, often finding himself left on the bench or not included in the matchday squad.Wilks made an additional three appearances in the FA Cup, scoring in a 4-0 win against Cardiff City, the winger’s only goal in the 2023/2024 season.
According to Football Insider, Rotherham have opened talks to sign Wilks on a permanent deal. Steve Evans has limited resources on the wings with only Joseph Hungbo and Andre Green as their natural first-team wingers.
Wilks has appeared for Leeds United, Doncaster Rovers, Barnsley, Hull City, and Sheffield Wednesday, and he could now add Rotherham to that list.The player could bring in valuable League One experience, having won promotion from the third division with Hull City.
With the 25-year-old dropping down the Wednesday pecking order, he could be available for a lesser fee, but Rotherham are not the only one after the winger, with Charlton Athletic, Reading and Stockport County all reportedly interested.
The upcoming League One campaign looks to be tough, with big-spending Birmingham City looking the favourites for promotion. The Millers may have to bring in more quality if they want an instant promotion back to the Championship, and Wilks could be a big signing to do this.
“We are in some positions where we are proactive and this is the honest conversations we have had, to give some players a clear picture and schedule for what we want to do.
“Now we have games and games and maybe you have time you are not in the squad or you are just on the bench, but the important thing is they know where they are in the club.”
