Explained: Brentford's finances, stadium move and what it means for buying players - The Athletic

Paul Scholes has suggested that an Ivan Toney u-turn could finally push Arsenal on to winning the Premier League.

The striker has just a year remaining on his Brentford deal and has been linked with a host of clubs. Manchester United remain interested in him, while Arsenal are long-term admirers.

How Premier League's Brentford Punches Above Its Payroll Weight

While the Gunners have kept a close eye on the striker in the past, they have since ended their interest in him. Scholes believes that was the wrong decision and has hinted that he could be the signing to finally push the Gunners onto glory under Mikel Arteta.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, the former Man United star said: “It’s hard to say they’ve not got enough up there because of the amount of goals they scored [last season]. It was ridiculous, but I do think signing a centre forward would help. Signing an out and out number nine who will guarantee you 25 goals, obviously that would help.

“Are those players out there? Ivan Toney has been mentioned a lot, I think he scores 25 goals in that Arsenal team. I think he scores 25 goals in a lot of teams.”

Arsenal are not the only side that Scholes has urged to make a move for Toney. He has also sent a message to his former side Man United to swoop for his signature despite having already forked out £40m for Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna.

“You have got to look at the forward players. Could Hojlund score 25 goals for us this season? I would be amazed, I’d be surprised. You look at someone like Ivan Toney if he could come to us. Could he score 25 goals? I think he could.

“I think he [Hojlund] is really good but he has been brought into this country at 19 [21] years of age and he has been asked to be the No.9 for Man United. It is an iconic role for players who are scoring 20, 25, 30 goals and winning league titles.”

Toney, 28, comes into this season off the back of a frustrating campaign for Brentford. He missed large swathes of last term due to his ban for breaching the FA’s betting rules.
