Steven Schumacher claimed his Stoke side were “rubbish” for parts of the second half against Coventry City – the team he says are tipped to be the ‘surprise package’ of the Championship this season.
The Potters’ boss revealed that he had warned his players how tough a match they were going to face against the Sky Blues, albeit Mark Robins’ men failing to show their quality in a poor first half at the bet365 Stadium.
Stoke then scored the only goal of the game against the run of play in the second half when Lewis Baker started and finished a free-flowing move to secure the 1-0 victory.

“I think we were all aware of how difficult this game was going to be,” said Schumacher, in his post-match press conference. “We were coming up against a Coventry team who have strengthened really well in the summer and everyone is tipping them to be the surprise package in the Championship this season, so we spoke to the players about their strengths and what they’re good at, but also we felt that we could hurt them with our play.
There was no further scoring as City took the honours over the Blades by 2-1 and kicked off their season with a win. A goalless draw at Brighton, a 2-1 win at Reading and Crystal Palace beaten by the only goal at the Sky Blues next Highfield Road date saw CCFC at fourth spot in Division One early doors.
