Desperate’ – Kieran Trippier shows Newcastle commitment with two questions set to be answered
Eddie Howe admits he changed his plan for Kieran Trippier during Saturday’s 1-0 win over Brest as the right-back was ‘desperate’ to play longer than 45 minutes.
The England full-back only returned to training on Tyneside this week following an extended post-Euro 2024 break. Trippier and Gordon’s late arrival to pre-season action meant Howe was only ever going to use both players for one half during Friday and Saturday’s Sela Cup clashes.
Gordon was indeed used for the first 45 minutes of the 4-0 win over Girona, finding the net in the process, but was brought off despite also wanting to earn more minutes in the friendly. Trippier, however, was replaced in the 69th minute during a tight contest.

“Anthony and Kieran were the latest two to come back for us [from international duty] so we had to manage them both,” Howe said after the 1-0 victory. “Anthony was 45 [minutes] and Kieran was absolutely desperate to stay on a bit longer today and we allowed that given that the game wasn’t that transitional. He looked comfortable, I thought. Physically I thought he looked good. A good day’s work for him as well.”
Newcastle United manager Becky Langley hailed the team’s huge progression after their 4-3 penalty shootout victory over AC Milan in the Women’s Sela Cup at St. James’ Park yesterday.
The Magpies battled out a thrilling 2-2 draw with the Italian giants in normal time before winning the resulting penalty shootout 4-3. The victory saw Newcastle United win the first-ever Women’s Sela Cup despite having gone into the game as underdogs.
When reflecting on the win in the post-match press conference, Newcastle United manager Langley said that she was pleased with how her side dug deep to grind out a result.
“I’m absolutely delighted first and foremost,” Langley said. “It was a very hard contest against a very good AC Milan side.We spent a lot of time without the ball and we really had to grind it out, that second half especially.
