Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith is in talks with Wrexham over a possible move to the League One side, according to The Star.

The forward netted the fourth and final goal in Wednesday’s demolition of Plymouth Argyle on Sunday during a seven-minute cameo. The former Rotherham United man made 31 Championship appearances last term, scoring on four occasions. However, he only started 11 of those 31 matches.

The Owls have multiple striking options, including the now-permanent Ike Ugbo, leaving Smith’s long-term future at Hillsborough in doubt. With his contract due to expire at the end of this season, Wednesday may see the time as being right to move him on.

Phil Parkinson’s men have a plethora of strikers to choose from, including Jack Marriott and Steven Fletcher who both scored on Saturday. Ollie Palmer started alongside Marriott as last season’s 24-goal man Paul Mullin continues his injury

comeback.Adding a striker of Smith’s calibre to their ranks will give The Red Dragons an enviable League One frontline as they push for a consecutive promotion. What it would mean for the likes of Billy Waters remains to be seen.

Where he would fit in their lineup is an interesting question. They already possess two similar centre forwards in Ollie Palmer and Steven Fletcher and have Mullin to return. On paper, this is a good signing as Smith has an excellent League One record but it could lead to selection headaches for Parkinson as he needs to balance the game time afforded to his talented attackers.
