Daniel Farke’s conflicting Leeds United verdict after Portsmouth opener

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has hit out at his side for ‘not being awake’ during important moments in their 3-3 draw with Portsmouth on the opening day of the Championship.

The Whites boss hailed his sides start to the game in what was the best 20 minutes he’s seen at Elland Road, but was disappointed with the way his side didn’t take advantage of their bright start. Brenden Aaronson’s last gasp equaliser salvaged a point, which could and probably should have been all three had the United States international not squandered a golden opportunity late on.

Speaking to Leeds United, Farke said: “Of course we’re disappointed it’s not all three points after such a dominant performance. Welcome back to the Championship.

“Each and every small moment can change the whole game. We started on the front foot with probably the best 20 minutes I’ve seen at Elland Road if I’m honest. Scored a fantastic goal, hit the crossbar three times.

“Just more situations where we were not awake. We gave an unnecessary free-kick away when the opponents player was already standing outside. It’s the first time they were in our half, they can bring the tall centre-backs up. The set piece comes in and we clear, then you’re not in formation in the second phase and the score a goal.

“Normally you lose such a game. I’m pretty happy that in the last moments of the game we were able to show another reaction. It was a good finish, a good equaliser from Brenden Aaronson and we should’ve won the game with the last situation because it was a 100 per cent chance.

“Normally it’s a joke that we didn’t win this game. When you watch all the statistics, the expected goals, whatever. It’s tough because after scoring three goals we have to speak about effectiveness again today.

“The major thing is you shouldn’t concede three goals. We didn’t allow many chances just three strikes on target I think. It was too much in order to win the game. It’s better to be there with a point, than to start with a loss so we have to take the positives.”
