Tomorrow evening Crewe Alexandra make the trip to South Yorkshire to face League 1 Rotherham United in the first round of this season’s Carabao Cup. Like the Alex, the Millers would also lose 1-0 on Saturday in their league opener as they had a long away trip to Exeter City.
Last season saw the Millers finishing bottom of the Championship having won 5 games, drawn 12 and lost 29. They lost against Fulham in the FA Cup 3rd Round and against Stoke City in the Carabao Cup 2nd Round after knocking out Morecambe on penalties in the previous round.
They have signed goalkeeper Cameron Dawson, defenders Reece James, Zak Jules, Joe Rafferty and Sean Raggett, midfielders Liam Kelly, Alex McDonald, Joe Powell (brother of Alex midfielder Jack) and Jack Holmes as well as forward Jonson Clarke-Harris while forwards Joseph Hungbo and Esapa Osong have joined on season-long loans.
Leaving the club this summer were Viktor Johansson, Peter Kioso and Oliver Rathbone on permanent deals while Curtis Durose, Grant Hall, Jamie Lindsay, Nathianiel Ford, Tyler Blackett, Tolaji Bola, Cafu, Sam Clucas, Shane Ferguson, Joel Holvey, Sean Morrison, Lee Peltier and Tom Eaves all left when their deals expired. Forwards Joshua Kayode and Josh Ayres have left the club on loan.
Michael Smith opened the scoring for the visitors in the 7th minute before an own goal from Dave Richards 16 minutes from time doubled the lead, a minute after substitute midfielder Scott Robertson was shown a red card for the Alex for two yellow cards.
