Assistant manager Kevin Nicholson insists no one is getting carried away by Exeter City’s winning start to the new season.

The Grecians opened their campaign with a deserved 1-0 win against a Rotherham United side that many feel will there or thereabouts come the end of the season. Millers boss Steve Evans has not been afraid to splash the cash this summer, but while they did create some good chances against the Grecians, Exeter were good value for the win having dominated for long spells.

Tonight, the Grecians return to action with a Carabao Cup first round clash at League Two side Walsall. Changes are likely, with the league taking precedence right now, but there is no doubt that City would love another Cup run – as they did in the competition last year, reaching the fourth round for the first time since 1989.

“There were lots of positives, but no one is getting carried away,” Nicholson said. “It was one game and a lot can change, as we know, but our focus is straight on to Walsall.

“It’s the next game but, for us now, we have a squad that’s competitive, we have got guys that will be given opportunities through necessity, some will get opportunities because they have worked hard and deserve that.

“We need to make sure we go to Walsall, who had a good result themselves on the opening day, and we put our best foot forward. We have a competitive, strong squad of players that are fit and ready; we have some young lads that are coming through desperate for an opportunity and this is a great game for us to go and show what we say we are – a squad, a team.
