Barrow AFC boss Pete Wild gives an update on injured duo | The Mail

There was a lot of hype surrounding the first game in the third tier for 19 years but Phil Parkinson’s side stepped up to the plate and registered an opening day home win against Wycombe Wanderers.

The League One campaign is put on hold tonight when Wrexham face Championship side Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in the first round of the cup and the Reds will fancy their chances of springing a surprise.

Wrexham came ever so close to registering a shock against the Blades in the FA Cup two seasons ago and, buoyed by Saturday’s win, they go into the game full of confidence.

With plenty of options at his disposal, Parkinson will be able to make changes and give a run-out to players who didn’t feature at the weekend. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the likes of Sebastian Revan and Ollie Rathbone feature from the start.

It’s a chance to impress and whoever is involved, it should be a cracker if those two games in 2022-23 are anything to go by.

Wrexham were forced into releasing many of their experienced players this summer as they made the step up to League One.

Wrexham let go of nine players in total but the most notable were defensive titans Aaron Hayden, Jordan Tunnicliffe and Ben Tozer while captain Luke Young also departed.

It’s a quartet that amassed over 500 appearances between them and helped inspire the side to successive promotions.

Luckily, following their incredible service to Wrexham, they’ve all found new clubs with Luke Young and Aaron Hayden remaining at League Two outfits Cheltenham and Carlisle respectively while Tozer and Tunnicliffe dropped down to the National League with Forest Green and Solihull Moors.

Most supporters of the Welsh outfit will wish them well at their new clubs, although for Hayden, his first competitive appearance at Carlisle didn’t get off to the best start. However, Wrexham’s top scorer across the last three seasons is also undroppable when fully fit and that unfortunately means Marriott could make way for him.

Parkinson has proven in the past that he doesn’t like playing the duo together, instead opting for one of Fletcher or Palmer alongside the Liverpudlian. It will be interesting to see how Wrexham lineup once their star striker returns and how Marriott’s game time is impacted.
