Haji Wright headed the hosts into the lead, but Ciaron Brown pulled United level with just over 20 minutes played.
Milan van Ewijk resorted the Sky Blues advantage, before Mark Harris grabbed a second U’s leveller just before the hour mark.
Wright though had the final say, when he took full advantage of a casual back pass from Will Vaulks.
We picked out some of the key talking points from a United perspective. Our player ratings after late heartache for U’s
Starting with the winning goal, it was a bitter way for the U’s to end the match.
Vaulks received the ball just inside the Sky Blues half, and with his back to the opposition goal, he searched for a back pass to the United defence.
It was misplaced and overhit though, with Wright able to nip in well ahead of Elliott Moore.
From that point, Wright had the space to run in behind and all he had to do was beat Jamie Cumming, and did so by rounding the U’s goalkeeper.

Two more recent defensive recruits from the Sky Blues for the Pirates were also on show at St. Andrews, central defender Tom Davies (also now a CCFPA member) and defensive midfielder Abu Ogogo! The CCFC lads were, of course, well aware of the qualities of each of these Sky Blue Former Players and, thankfully, overcoming the alleged ‘curse of the former player’ managed to nullify their particular threat and those of their colleagues.
First, on the stroke of half-time, following a fairly evenly balanced first half, with JCH putting himself about, ‘Shippers’ netted with a powerful left-foot half-volley past the Pirate’s goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola after pouncing on a scuffed cross from Wesley Jobello. Despite sustained pressure from Graham Coughlan‘s Bristolians in the second period the visitors failed to make a mark as the the Sky Blues defence held firm. The Gas failed to hit a single shot on target all game!
