Liverpool got their 2024/25 Premier League campaign underway in perfect fashion with a 2-0 win over Ipswich Town on Saturday. The match was discussed on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, ahead of Leicester City versus Tottenham Hotspur.

The regular pundits Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville were on the show. As well as reviewing action from the weekend, the duo gave their predictions for the season. The obvious starting point was naming who they thought would win the title and which sides would take the other Champions League spots in the top four.

It was achingly dull and predictable, designed to drive rage clicks. Unsurprisingly, former Manchester United defender Neville picked Manchester United to finish ahead of Liverpool, same as every season. Carragher mocked him, though he also did so online in unusual fashion.

The former Liverpool man selected Manchester City as champions, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham completing the leading quartet. Neville, by sharp contrast, had his old side and Chelsea in the top four, despite both teams having hugely underwhelming campaigns last season. The die-hard United man did at least give Liverpool fifth place, with Carragher doing likewise for Neville’s mob.

His opinions alone would be reason enough to laugh the former Red Devil out of town. Carragher had more fun with it, though, by posting a sly picture of his colleague getting changed on his X (formerly Twitter) feed
