Bristol Rovers verdict: More final third frustrations with patience needed after Stockport loss
The talking points after Bristol Rovers lost 2-0 away at Stockport County on Saturday afternoon
Afternoons like Saturday at Stockport County are nothing new for Bristol Rovers, nor any other side in League One; they happen. The Gas had every right to feel pleased about themselves for the majority of the first half having enjoyed silky spells of possession and created some clear cut opportunities that weren’t taken. However, they then had to deal with the frustration of not only not being ahead at the break, but behind.
As Matt Taylor stated post-match, you would expect Clinton Mola to head the ball away more often than not as the defender’s misjudged clearance fell to star County forward Louie Barry to volley home a sumptuous opener at Edgeley Park. The 23-year-old has had an outstanding start to life in blue-and-white quarters but, like all of his teammates, was never going to be immune from errors.
However, the way in which Rovers started the second half was arguably the most irritating aspect to the defeat at Stockport as any momentum that seemed to be building before the opener looked to have evaporated. That culminated in the hosts doubling their lead via Kyle Wooton following a poorly defended corner and the game then looked settled.
That being said, chances fell to the Gas in the remaining 20 minutes. Substitute Scott Sinclair came closest while Promise Omochere had sniffs in front of goal. Rovers ended the game with 15 shots, having managed just a third of that tally at Rotherham United the weekend prior in which they came away with a goalless draw.
Four points from the opening three games, especially when two of which have been particularly difficult-looking trips away from home, is by no means a poor start. However, the pros and cons of this new look Gas team are clear to see with still evidently a whole lot more to come from them. It’s still very much early days.
