The £40m move from Chelsea that provides Newcastle United with double boost
Newcastle United will pocket 30% of a fee for Ivan Toney but the bigger boost could be the fact that Chelsea now have a striker on board before the window shuts
Chelsea’s late move for Ivan Toney will help extinguish any late window fears that the Blues will return for Alexander Isak.
The Stamford Bridge side enquired about the Sweden international back in June when Newcastle were under pressure to sell stars ahead of the PSR health check deadline. Chelsea’s call to Newcastle in June for Isak was a short one as they tried to test Newcastle’s resolve.
But as Chelsea look set to close in on Toney, with Brentford prepared to sell the star for between £40m-£50m, it puts an end to any lingering doubts that the London club would come back for Isak. Newcastle would place as astronomical fee on Isak in any case with the likelihood of a new contract after the window shuts looking increasingly likely.
Toney, 28, would also earn Newcastle a money spinner with 30% of his future sell on fee coming back to St James’ Park after part of the deal between United and Peterborough in 2018. Posh supremo Darragh MacAnthony revealed the details of Toney’s transfer sell on fees recently and said: “Newcastle didn’t want to sell Ivan Toney to us, they wanted him to move on loan.
“We don’t loan strikers so they agreed to sell and they wanted 50% of any future transfer profit. That was never going to happen as we were paying a fee for Ivan as well, so we settled on 30%. We paid Newcastle a transfer fee of £350k spread over three years.
“We earn money every time Ivan moves and so do Newcastle.”
When asked his stance on retaining players, Eddie Howe had said today: “Keeping players is a success. Incomings? That work is still going on behind the scenes, everyone trying their best.”
