The third round draw takes place after tonight’s clash between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United, live on Sky Sports.

Coventry almost took the lead early on when Liam Kitching’s header from four-yards out hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced to safety from Kasey Palmer’s corner.

City came forward again soon after as debutant Norman Bassette did well to keep the ball in play before Ephron Mason-Clark curled a shot over the crossbar.

Bassette then showed an excellent burst of speed down the left and cut the ball back to Thomas-Asante who placed a first time shot inches past the post from eight-yards out.

Mark Robins’ side picked up where they left off after the break as Jamie Allen dragged an effort wide on his 150th appearance for the club.

However, City eventually made their pressure count as Allen won back possession and Palmer played a pass to Thomas-Asante who saw his deflected shot from distance loop over Oxford goalkeeper Matt Ingram and into the net.

The Sky Blues almost doubled their lead only for Ingram to push Mason-Clark’s square ball across the box to safety after the latter produced an excellent piece of skill to flick the ball over his marker.

And City went close again late on as Ingram made a superb fingertip save to push Thomas-Asante’s header from Ben Sheaf’s cross behind for a corner.

Ingram made another fine stop in the closing stages to tip Victor Torp’s first time effort behind diving low to his left as City saw out the remaining minutes to book their place in the next round.
