The Hoddle of Coffee: Tottenham Hotspur news and links for Thursday, September 5
Tottenham have missed out on German defender Mats Hummels, who has joined AS Roma.
The North London club had a successful transfer window as they managed to resolve major issues by signing their top targets and even got rid of players who were no longer a part of their plans. But, they did miss out on bolstering their defence.
Ange Postecoglou was keen on adding another centre-back to the mix and they were in talks with Mats Hummels in recent months. However, they have missed out on the opportunity to sign the 75-cap German international defender.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the former Bayern Munich centre-back has signed for AS Roma. He will be joining them for the 2024/25 season for a salary of around €2 million plus add-ons. He has already undergone his medical with the Italian giants and they have made the deal official. But, before he made the move to Roma, Spurs were keen on signing the 35-year-old centre-back.
As per a report from HITC, the North London club were in talks with Hummels’ agents back in June regarding a move to the Premier League. While there was significant interest in his services from the Saudi Pro League and the Major League Soccer, he was keen on staying in Europe after parting ways with Borussia Dortmund following the expiry of his contract.
With only three reliable centre-back options in his squad, Postecoglou was keen on adding another defender to ensure they have sufficient depth. Hummels could have been an exceptional signing for them given the kind of experience and quality he has.
