‘I’ve heard’ – £57m Newcastle United pair awkwardly address Marc Guehi Crystal Palace saga

In a transfer saga played out in public, it comes as little surprise to hear the pursuit of Marc Guehi made its way into Newcastle United’s dressing room.

The Magpies identified Guehi as their top target and spent the final month of the summer window trying to negotiate a deal with Crystal Palace.

United were understood to have bid as high as £65million including add-ons for but the Eagles rejected multiple offers. Talks between the two clubs remained active up until the final 48 hours of the window but a deal couldn’t be agreed.

And just about every step of the saga made its way into the public domain, whether that be through leaks or Palace chairman Steve Parish doing one of his many interviews. It was a frustrating pursuit fans – and players had to endure.

Newcastle trio Tino Livramento, Nick Pope and Anthony Gordon are currently on England duty with Guehi as they prepare for the Nations League double-header against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

Ahead of their trip to Dublin on Saturday, Pope and Gordon sat down for a game of ‘Guess Who’ with ITV Sport. Both players had to identify their teammates without saying their name, number, club or position. And yes, you guessed it… Guehi was one of them.

Pope, tasked with describing Guehi, certainly didn’t look to skirt around the recent saga, with his first clue. “We bid for him and we didn’t get him,” said Pope and without hesitation, Gordon replied “Marc Guehi”. “So I’ve heard,” Pope then said. “Rumour has it. Rumour has it.”

Now, who wouldn’t have wanted to be a fly on the wall when Newcastle’s contingent saw Guehi for the first time this week?
