Chris Mepham reveals ‘calmness’ he hopes to bring to Sunderland’s Premier League push
The Black Cats signed the defender on loan from Bournemouth late in the transfer window
New Sunderland signing Chris Mepham admitted he is “eager to get going” as he settles into his new surroundings. The 26-year-old defender completed a season-long loan move from Bournemouth on transfer deadline day and was a spectator for the Wearsiders win over Portsmouth.
Mepham has since been on international duty with Wales where he played 90 minutes in a 2-1 win over Montenegro on Monday before touching base at the Academy of Light.
“I’m delighted to be here” he told safc.com. “It was a rushed end to the transfer window and it got done quite late but it was good to meet the lads at the hotel in Southampton for the Portsmouth game. It’s been good to come to the training ground and get used to the building, the lads and the staff so it’s been a good start.”
Mepham continued: “I like to think I am a good technical centre-back. I like to think I bring that calmness on the ball, and compete well. Going to the Portsmouth game, I noticed that every time there was a big tackle the crowd loved it. I relish that side of the game but hopefully the combination of both can work well here.
“With the experience I have, I want to help others around me. If I can make their life easier then that would be great. I’ve played here before, the atmosphere is incredible.
It’s a big reason why I’ve come here. It’s a big club with a big fanbase so as a player, you want to play in those kinds of games. Hopefully I can contribute to a successful season.”
