The Indianapolis Colts have found their new defensive coordinator after it was reported on Monday afternoon that they are expected to hire former Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo.

Anarumo is from Staten Island, New York where he was born on August 18th, 1966. After high school, he attended Wagner where he earned a bachelor’s degree in special education. During his time at Wagner, he got his start in coaching as the Junior Varsity head coach at Susan E. Wagner High School in his hometown.

He spent 23 years as a coach in the college ranks. Anarumo started as a running backs coach for his alma mater Wagner in 1989 for a season before moving on to Syracuse for two seasons as a graduate assistant and assistant defensive backs coach.

After that, he got his first crack as a defensive coordinator and also served as a defensive back coach for two seasons for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. That stint led to spending five years at Harvard as an assistant head coach, defensive backs, and special teams coach role.

Anarumo spent his final 10 seasons as a defensive back coach. He spent 2001-2003 in that role at Marshall before spending 2004-2011 in the same role for Purdue.

His start in the NFL came in 2012 after he joined Joe Philbin’s staff as the defensive backs coach for the Miami Dolphins. Anarumo previously spent time with Philbin during his time at Harvard and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

After Miami let Philbin go in the 2015 season as well as Kevin Coyle, who was serving as the defensive coordinator, Anarumo took over as the interim defensive coordinator. Following that season, he stuck with the franchise and went back to his defensive backs coach role under new Dolphins head coach Adam Gase.
