Angel Reese announced she would graduate from college this weekend. When she told her mother the news, the forward was greeted by unbridled excitement.

Her degree is a point of pride after facing a misinformation campaign about her academics throughout her senior season with the Tigers. “Ahhh i graduate on saturday!!!” Reese wrote on the social media platform X.

“Don’t have to wake up and think about another assignment lmaoooo. i called my momma & she running around the house so happy cause she know all the odds that were against me & she so happy it’s all over and i can live my best life now.”

Reese, 22, begins her WNBA career this week after being selected at No. 7 in the 2024 draft. She’s expected to enter Chicago’s starting lineup from the get-go, as the rebuilding Sky have been left short-handed by fellow first-rounder Kamilla Cardoso’s shoulder injury.

At LSU, Reese became a nationally recognized name for her fiery on-court persona, statistical production and ability to take fans behind the scenes into her life through social media. But her popularity proved a double-edged sword, as it brought persistent online trolls who rooted for her downfall. The issue of academics was part of the playbook used against Reese.

Since joining the WNBA, however, Reese has appeared in good spirits, vibing with teammates through training camp and the preseason and fulfilling a personal dream of attending the Met Gala. She told reporters: “I went to the Met Gala, slayed the Met Gala in New York, came back, slayed against New York [Liberty in the preseason]. It’s what I do.”

“We’re just trying to play together,” head coach Teresa Weatherspoon said. “We’re just trying to play the game the right way – share the ball, play with each other, play for each other and have fun doing it. Of course we want to be great on the defensive side of the ball and we want to execute on the offensive side of the ball, but we want to have fun doing it by playing together.”
