EVERY word Saints boss Russell Martin said after his side’s 5-3 victory at Championship Cardiff City in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

A ridiculous game but a 5-3 win, what is your assessment of that?

RM: We won, that’s the important thing. There was lots of good stuff. We scored some amazing team goals and had a moment of brilliance from James Bree.

I’m really happy that we won. I’m really grateful for the fans and the amount of people that came. They were amazing tonight.

I’m really pleased for the young guys who made their debuts and got on the pitch. I’m really pleased for Juan Larios who got on but not for long enough.

Unfortunately, the game kind of dictated that, but I’m really pleased for him because he’s worked so hard.

Their first goal is a moment of brilliance by a player I’ve liked for a long time, Rubin Colwill. He’s a really talented player.

Especially our younger players, so it’s a big lesson for them because that’s a mistake. I was furious about that at half-time.

Then they have to go and produce some brilliant moments to win the game but the gap is too big between the brilliant moments and the not-so-good moments.

It’s not how we train, and they took some liberties in the first half, some of the players – but that’s learning.

They’ll learn from that and they’ll be better for that, and they dug in. They showed real grit. They showed desire.

They have such an opportunity to maximise what they’ve got and show what they’ve got and to have a career like Adam Lallana has had.

I really believe that but he’s the benchmark he came on the pitch and just did everything right. So calm, so composed. Brilliant detail.

I just spoke to him. He absolutely loved being back on the pitch, that was a big bonus for us. He’ll help us a lot. Lots to improve but lots to be happy about.

Adam Lallana returning for Saints 10 years on from his departure is some story

RM: Yeah, he was great. He was brilliant. I’m really pleased for him. I love Adam as a person.
