West Ham United has secured a 2-1 victory over Manchester United, thanks to a controversial penalty awarded in the 92nd minute. The penalty was given after referee David Coote consulted the VAR monitor and deemed that Matthijs de Ligt had fouled Danny Ings inside the penalty area ¹. Jarrod Bowen converted the penalty, sealing the win for West Ham.

 

The decision has sparked controversy, with Manchester United players and manager Erik ten Hag expressing frustration. They argued that the contact between De Ligt and Ings was minimal and that Ings had handled the ball before the challenge ². However, the Premier League has clarified that the VAR deemed there was sufficient contact on Ings’ lower leg, leading to the penalty being awarded ¹.

 

The win marks West Ham’s third consecutive Premier League victory over Manchester United at the London Stadium ². West Ham has moved up to 13th in the table, while Manchester United has dropped to 14th ¹. The loss is a significant setback for United, who have now picked up just 11 points from nine games and are six points adrift of the Champions League qualification spots ¹.
