At 1.20 a.m. on Thursday, the Brazilian was stopped by police and arrested. He was later accused with driving while above the legal limit for alcohol.
Joelinton will appear in court on January 26, two days after Newcastle’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Southampton.
Newcastle spent £40 million for the former Hoffenheim player in 2019, and he is believed to earn approximately £80,000 per week.
According to a Northumbria Police spokeswoman, police stopped a vehicle on Ponteland Road in Newcastle shortly before 1.20 a.m. today (Thursday) and arrested the occupant.
Joelinton Casio, 26, of Ponteland, has since been charged with exceeding the permitted alcohol limit. He is scheduled to appear before magistrates in Newcastle on January 26. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is aware of the event, and the situation is also being handled internally.
Joelinton has been a revelation under Howe, scoring in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Leicester in the Carabao Cup last eight.
He has been one of Howe’s success stories, despite initially suffering at St James’ Park, when the Englishman moved Joelinton to midfield.
Tuesday’s goal was his third in 21 appearances this season, and he has become as a fan favourite as the squad climbs to third place in the Premier League.
