MATCH RECAP, pres. by Provident Bank: Red Bulls, Nashville Battle to Draw in Season Opener.

The New York Red Bulls and Nashville SC faced off in the season opener, drawing 0-0 in Tennessee.

New York hit the post three times, narrowly missing taking the lead in what Head Coach Sandro Schwarz described as “unlucky moments.”

“To be honest, I’m satisfied with the performance,” Schwarz stated.

Emil Forsberg, captaining the Red Bulls for the first time in his debut, was one of the unlucky ones to hit the crossbar. Frankie Amaya and Dante Vanzier also discovered the posts.

“Emil, you can see his experience and quality,” Schwarz added.

“I think in general we played a good game; we controlled the game for a long time,” Forsberg told reporters. “We had some nice chances and a little unfortunate luck, but I’m glad to have made my debut. It was a great feeling. I believe we played a good match, but it is frustrating that we did not win, but there is a lot we can take away from this game.

New York kept the Nashville SC at bay for the majority of the night, while Nashville’s Joe Willis kept up his end of the bargain, stifling the Red Bulls at the doorway.

Coronel earned his first shutout of the season and the 31st of his Red Bulls career, ranking second in franchise history. Coronel has 14 road shutouts in his four seasons with New York. The Paraguayan goalkeeper has four shutouts in five career games against Nashville SC.

“Our defensive behaviour, our offensive transition, the mentality and how we defend was very good,” Schwarz went on to say. “I saw some really good moments. I’m a little unhappy with the outcome, but the entire team played quite well. Now we have to continue.

Daniel Edelman made his 50th appearance in all competitions for New York.

The Red Bulls have extended their away MLS regular season unbeaten record to five games, dating back to September 16, 2023. New York has a 5-2-1 record in its last eight season openers.
