Kalyn Kahler of ESPN recently spoke with Detroit Lions offensive lineman Dan Skipper, who spent time with the Colts in training camp ahead of the 2023 season. He also had some harsh words to share about how the Colts handled his exit from the team.Skipper signed with the Colts on August 1, 2023, and he spent the remainder of training camp with the team. He did not make the team’s 53-man roster and, as a result, was released on August 29 but rejoined the team one day later on their practice squad.

As Kahler’s story revealed, Skipper was released from the practice squad less than a week later, on September 4. Now, he has shared that when he was released that final time, neither Colts general manager Chris Ballard nor head coach Shane Steichen shared the news of his release. Instead, a “pro personnel guy” broke the news to Skipper.

Over the last few months, the team’s leadership has been questioned from top to bottom. This story from Skipper will not help those claims die down anytime soon. Hopefully, any criticism they get from this information now being made public can be used to improve their overall process going forward.

Unlike most head coaches that have been fired, Steichen hasn’t had a terrible record. The issue is that the Colts spent their fourth overall pick on Anthony Richardson and Steichen hasn’t helped him grow very much. In fairness, Richardson was injured for most of 2023, but even with 11 games under his belt in 2024, there was little growth.

In 2024, Richardson threw for 1,814 yards, eight touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. While Richardson’s calling card is his rushing, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns is a huge problem. Even at the end of the year, where you would typically expect the sophomore to show flashes, he really didn’t. In his last three games, Richardson threw for three touchdowns and four interceptions.
