Ohio State’s Former Biggest Star Is Having A Problem Finding An NFL Home.
The NFL offseason can be a humiliating experience for many players, and one former Ohio State quarterback is discovering how difficult it is to secure a spot in the league.
Justin Fields, Chicago Bears quarterback, is currently in limbo with the team. He is projected to be their starting quarterback, but they have the first selection in this year’s NFL Draft and will most likely select USC quarterback Caleb Williams, leaving Fields without a home in Chicago.
Fields played for Ohio State in 2019 and 2020, helping the Buckeyes win a playoff game against Clemson in 2020 but falling short in the championship against Alabama. Fields would leave Ohio State that spring and be the 11th choice in the NFL draft.
Many NFL teams have made quarterback moves this offseason, including the Atlanta Falcons with Kirk Cousins, the Las Vegas Raiders with Gardner Minshew, the Pittsburgh Steelers with Russell Wilson, and the New England Patriots with Jacoby Brissett, but Fields has yet to find a trade partner.
Trevor Lawrence, the first overall pick, continues to start in Jacksonville, but Zach Wilson was the Jets’ backup last season until Aaron Rodgers was injured, and he will be a backup again this season, either in New York or elsewhere. Trey Lance was dealt from the San Francisco 49ers to the Dallas Cowboys after training camp last season, and on Sunday, the New England Patriots traded Mac Jones to Jacksonville to be Lawrence’s backup.
The 2021 quarterback class has struggled, and Fields still has a chance to start in the NFL this season, but his chances appear limited.
