Mets trade deadline addition is the roster casualty to make room for J.D. Martinez.
Every addition to the New York Mets roster results in a subtraction. The full 40-man roster required the organization to make a quick choice on who would replace J.D. Martinez. Several more roster cuts are on the road, but for Martinez, Phil Bickford has been designated for assignment.
Bickford, who the Mets acquired at the trade deadline last year, was dreadful in August but great in September. DJ Stewart has reversed his monthly splits and is no longer a member of the 40-man roster as of today.
Designating a player for assignment does not always imply the end. Bickford may clear waivers and accept a minor league assignment. The Mets have another option: trade him somewhere. Cash considerations, anyone?
DFAing Bickford was probably a simple decision. He had the worst spring performance of anyone on the bubble who didn’t have any minor league options. Sean Reid-Foley and Yohan Ramirez jumped ahead of him early in the bullpen battle. Infielder Zack Short, who has a slim chance of making the team, has played remarkably well this spring. However, given his track record and predicted limitations, the organization should consider an offensive player rather than a defensive one.
Ji-Man Choi’s less remarkable streak at the plate may have ruined any chances he had of making the Opening Day roster, preventing him from shoving someone else off. The absence of minor league possibilities for certain players may force decisions to be made at the last minute. In fact, Saturday’s lineup is loaded with guys competing for their spot on the 40-man roster.
