Sunderland’s plans to improve Stadium of Light and match experience
DAVID Bruce says significant investment into the Stadium of Light this summer will help to “bring back the heart and soul” and add “personality” to Sunderland’s home on a matchday.
While there remains uncertainty on the football side, with a new head coach not yet in place, the Black Cats are cracking on with plans to improve the matchday experience for supporters at the Stadium of Light.
Already this summer, Sunderland have unveiled plans to revamp the club’s retail, servicing and ticketing operations, with work underway at the stadium.
“We’ve got to make that stadium a must have rather than a nice to have,” said Bruce, a Wearsider who joined Sunderland on the back of spending more than decade in the United States working for the MLS.
“We’re trying to do that in the summer with the investment that’s going into the stadium, the owner is putting more money into it than has been at any stage over the last 20 years.
It’s surely not beyond the realm of possibility that several well- backed candidates have either turned down offers or have expressed reservations, bearing in mind the manner in which the club is run and the significant role played by Kristjaan Speakman in both recruitment and retention.
No coach of any stature with ambitions both for club and the furthering of his own career would put himself in a position where critical decisions are taken without consultation.

No one in this day and age would demand total control, but surely a close partnership is the best recipe for success.
The current situation is of great concern and there appears to be no sign of a quick resolution.
The owner has a number of experts in a variety of fields on hand to help him make critical decisions, so perhaps it’s time for him to reassess the role of ‘Sporting Director’ and to decide whether the present incumbent is suitable for the club’s requirements in its present form.
