FOOTBALL – Coventry City sign loanee Binks on permanent deal
COVENTRY City have confirmed the permanent signing of defender Luis Binks for an undisclosed fee from Italian side Bologna.
Binks enjoyed a successful loan spell with the Sky Blues last season and has signed a four-year deal with the club.
The 22-year-old made 28 appearances for City in all competitions last term and helped the club reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
Binks said: “I said a few times last season that I wanted to come back ahead of the new season, and I am buzzing to be back.
“To work with the manager and Adi can only be a good thing for me and I am excited to see where it goes.
“I had to be patient last season but I had some great moments, especially that game at Wembley against Manchester United. That game was so special and I want to experience that again.
“I am delighted and it will be very special to get the shirt back on next season.
“I may have been a loan player last season but I did not feel like one, and I tried to play like I was a permanent Coventry City player.
“I embraced the club and I fully bought into everything that the club is trying to do. I truly feel like one of you.”
Coventry boss Mark Robins added: “We’re very pleased to welcome Luis back to the club, this time permanently.
“Luis impressed us with his ability and versatility last season while on loan with us, and he is a positive presence to have around the club.
“He is an accomplished defender who is good on the ball and has an experience, and maturity that belies his years, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to continue to work with him as he continues his development with us.”
Binks began his career in Tottenham Hotspur’s academy before signing a professional contract with MLS side Montreal Impact in February 2020.
He played eight games for Monteal before making the move to Serie A side Bologna later that summer but finished the MLS season with Impact playing a further 17 times.
Binks made 15 appearances for Bologna the following season before enjoying a loan spell at Serie B side Como in 2022/23.
He has represented England up to under-19 level and is also eligible to play for Scotland.
