Two days ago, we covered claims from Spain which stated Tottenham Hotspur’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg is the best possible option for Atlético Madrid to bolster their midfield this summer.

This report surfaced almost a month after AS said the 28-year-old isn’t the priority target for the La Liga side.

Saúl Ñíguez is expected to make a switch to Sevilla and his exit could lighten Atlético’s wage bill, which would help them sign a defensive midfielder.

Conor Gallagher out to prove a point in new Chelsea role ahead of Euro 2024 | Evening Standard

That’s according to Wednesday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo, who say the Madrid club’s target list includes the Tottenham player, Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino, Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher and Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte.

The newspaper points out Merino can operate as a defensive midfielder even though it’s not his preferred position. He is still a target for Los Rojiblancos because his deal lasts until 2025.If Atlético were to secure Merino’s services, they could still sign another midfielder and this is where Højbjerg fits in. He impressed for Denmark at the Euros, and operates as a defensive midfielder.

There’s a deal to be done here for Atlético, considering earlier claims have stated that the Dane would favour a move away from Spurs.
