“The plan is for Joe to play and again, he is looking forward to it,” City’s goalkeeper coach, Kevin Miller, said. “He has bedded in well with the players in the three days he has been here, he has settled in so easily and it can be tough to be a 20-year-old kid to just blend in with the group. But he’s done great and what I have seen of him in training so far, I am really looking forward to working with him.”

The Eagles beat AS Monaco and Benfica in the group stage, while draws with Athletic Bilbao and Feyenoord were enough for them to qualify for the quarter-finals. There, they dispatched Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 before a 4-2 win over Everton in the semi-finals booked them a final date with PSV.

Whitworth was a stand-out performer that night, repelling the Dutch side time and time again before a deflected Franco Umeh strike in the second half sealed their win. In the crowd that night was an impressed Miller, himself a former Palace goalkeeper.
