Leeds United club sources lay down definitive Sammie Szmodics update – YEP
Leeds are likely to see Crysencio Summerville leave the club this summer, and with that comes the worry that goals could dry up in Daniel Farke’s squad as a result.
Logic dictates that the club would then look for someone to replace the goals that Summerville scores, dipping into the Championship market for a new signing.
The Rovers forward ended the season with 27 goals and the golden boot to his name as he fired John Eustace’s side to survival on the final day.
Leeds’ reported interest comes alongside that of Ipswich Town in the Premier League, who have already had two bids turned down
Since then, the Yorkshire Evening Post have moved to play down links between Leeds and the top-scoring Blackburn forward.
They share that the forward is not in fact a target for Leeds this summer as they bid to secure promotion at the second time of asking:Looking purely at goals would be an unwise metric to judge Szmodics’ ability to fit in at Leeds, because his role is a massive contrast to what he’d be doing at Leeds.
There’s a reason he’s not a target, because the qualities he undoubtedly possesses and showed at Blackburn last season would not translate to Leeds.
Playing on the counter attack with acres of space, not holding up the ball, not pressing, and barely linking up play with his back to goal, Szmodics is a terrific player in his own right, but the opposite of what Leeds need up front.
If Ipswich is his destination, he’s well worth that move, given how he and the Tractor Boys play with the likes of Conor Chaplin already.
Instead, the Whites are said to be looking elsewhere in their search for an attacker to bolster Daniel Farke’s squad.
Though Leeds would’ve been able to offer an improved salary to Szmodics, the Rovers forward is likely to favour a switch to the top-flight, if a fee can be agreed.
Rovers have been braced for offers for their star forward, who scored 33 goals in all competitions last season, all summer. They will not stand in his way if an acceptable figure is offered by Ipswich or another top-flight club.
