West Ham United to prioritise Noussair Mazraoui transfer as ambition thrills fans

West Ham going toe-to-toe with Manchester United for the signing of Noussair Mazraoui is a show of ambition that will please the club’s fans.

Sky Sport Germany reported on 23 July that with both the Red Devils and the Hammers chasing the Bayern Munich right-back, Mazraoui is the latter’s priority over Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer.

Manchester United reportedly cannot fund a deal for Mazraoui until Wan-Bissaka is sold, leaving the Hammers in a position of strength as they choose which of the two right-backs to pursue, rather than settling on the cheaper option who is not wanted by his club.

Bayern have reduced their £25.3million asking price to a fee between £17m and £21m for the 23-year-old [HITC, 23 July], giving Julen Lopetegui’s side a boost as they close in on the transfer.

West Ham hold the keys in Noussair Mazraoui transfer race

Few would have come into this summer’s transfer window under the impression that Manchester United’s business would be determined by respective actions at the London Stadium.

The Hammers potentially having free reign over their pursuit of Mazraoui puts them in a clear position of power in the market, with the added benefit of a back-up option from the club they’re competing with.

This means that even if Lopetegui’s side decide against paying up to £21m for Mazraoui, they could buy Wan-Bissaka for half that amount [Florian Plettenberg, 22 July], freeing up Manchester United to sign the former.

However, if the Irons are dead-set that Mazraoui is the man to play on the right-hand side of the Spaniard’s new-look defence, the Red Devils may not have the financial muscle to prevent a transfer.

Either way, Vladimir Coufal looks set to have significant competition for his starting spot next season – the only thing that remains to be seen is the identity of who his new team-mate will be.
