The U’s will be the first EFL team City face in pre-season after friendlies against four non-league sides, and Gary is keen to see how his side performs against teams from higher divisions.

“The quality of games will go up this week, we’re playing a team that won promotion out of our league, a Championship team,” Gary said. “Then on Saturday we’ve got Bristol City and then the double-header next Tuesday.

“Every game now is a real test for us; they will all prepare us in different ways to the games we had before, so we’re really looking forward to that challenge and seeing if we can build on what we’re trying to do while progressing towards the start of the season.”
