‘Ones to watch’: Journalist now says who is most likely to sign £25m man Newcastle or West Ham

Newcastle United and West Ham United seem to be competing for the same players a lot this summer.

With both sides looking to move on from disappointing Premier League finishes last season and neither having European football to offer, the clubs are fishing in the same ponds when it comes to transfers.

West Ham had appeared to be winning the race to sign Jonathan David until the £10million agent fees saw them bow out of the deal on principle, while Newcastle had also been eyeing a move for the Canadian, although don’t appear to have made any conctrete moves as yet.

Another player that both clubs are eyeing is Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo who was also on Manchester United’s radar until they were told by UEFA that they couldn’t do the deal because of INEOS’ ownership of both clubs.

Ben Jacobs says West Ham are winning the race for Fikayo Tomori

Newcastle have a few players in mind to fill that centre-back role with AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw the hot favourite to head to the North East, but also on the watch list of both club’s is Thiaw’s partner at Milan, Fikayo Tomori.

The £25million former Chelsea man has been linked with a return to the Premier League with Newcastle having made contact over a move, however, journalist Ben Jacobs recently told NUFC Matters that he believes West Ham lead the race on that front.I think with the Tomori situation, I’m told West Ham are more the ones to watch there at the moment”

West Ham signing Tomori could affect Newcastle signing Thiaw

We’d be absolutely fine with West Ham nabbing Tomori as long as Newcastle sealed the deal for Malick Thiaw. Not that we don’t rate Tomori, it just seems that the Canadian-born Englishman has any desire to move to the North East.

However, if West Ham were to land Tomori before we managed to get the deal for Thiaw over the line, that massively decreases our chances of doing the deal so fingers crossed that the move for Thiaw is close.
