Kris Boyd baffled by Wilfried Gnonto decision in Leeds United v Portsmouth
Gnonto made the score 2-2 with his goal in the 46th minute before Callum Lang’s stoppage-time penalty was cancelled out by a last-gasp Brenden Aaronson equaliser.
And Boyd, speaking live on Sky Sports News (10 August, 2:40 pm), didn’t understand why Farke took Gnonto off during the match.“Willy Gnonto, I thought caused problems the whole time he was on, yeah the goalkeeper might look at it and think I should do better,” Boyd said.
“But I’ll go back to the substitutions, I don’t think Dan James and Gnonto should have beenFarke’s side did not get off to the start supporters at Elland Road would have been hoping for.
A home match against a newly promoted side is about as favourable a first fixture a team can be handed. However, Leeds failed to capitalise on a golden opportunity to claim all three points.
In truth, they should have been out of sight, with the Whites registering 22 shots at goal compared to Portsmouth’s five. However, their wastefulness let them down.
And Farke’s decision to take Gnonto off might have been a costly one. The forward was in inspired form throughout proceedings and could have made a difference if he was still on during the latter stages of the match. After play-off final heartbreak last season Leeds will want to make another promotion push
However, if they’re going to do that, then Farke will need to make better in-game decisions as the season goes on.
Dean Ashton hailed an “absolutely terrific” moment he saw from Willy Gnonto in the first half of the thrilling Leeds United versus Portsmouth contest.
Gnonto created an opportunity for himself with a nice piece of footwork but his attempt was helped behind for a corner. However, Portsmouth scored against the run of play and then snatched another before half-time to truly stun their opponents.
Leeds ded early in the second half, only for Portsmouth to strike again in stoppage time, butdid at least snatch a point. It is just another example of how tough this division can be to get out of, although Leeds fans need no reminder of that.
