Exeter City want a win to mark Gary Caldwell’s new contract in style

The Grecians boss’ new deal was announced at the Fans’ Forum on Thursday.

Exeter City will be looking to mark manager Gary Caldwell’s new extended contract in style when Peterborough United visit St James Park on Saturday. The Grecians boss’ new deal was announced at the Fans’ Forum on Thursday.

After opening day victory for City over Rotherham United, the last two results on the pitch have been tinged with disappointment. Firstly there was EFL Cup exit on penalties to Walsall, which was then followed up by a 2-1 defeat to Northampton Town.

Posh began the League One season with a defeat, and then also exited the EFL Cup. But they thrashed Shrewsbury Town last weekend and will come to Devon looking to avoid a third straight defeat at SJP after losses to City in the past two seasons.

“We are after the final bit really,” assistant manager Kevin Nicholson said. “A lot of the performance was good in the middle part of the pitch, but the lads need to make sure we are on the front foot, aggressive, confident, and more ruthless.

“We need to take more care in the final third, the final pass and at the other side, making sure we are switched on as they are a very dangerous team so we need to make sure we react and are ready to nullify the threat and show them and our fans what we are about.

“Ultimately, I’ve come here to find my love for football and enjoy it again, but to also try and do something successful, and there’s a lot to aim for at this football club,” he said. “It’s going in the right direction and hopefully we can surprise a few this season and see where that takes us.
