Tim Steidten, the director of football of West Ham, would suffer if Julen Lopetegui is hired to succeed David Moyes.
Before leaving Wolverhampton Wanderers at the beginning of this season, if rumors are to be accepted, the Spaniard sought complete control over all transfer negotiations. It is difficult to understand how this would fit with the idea of Steidten supervising transfers, assuming these rumors are accurate.
With much of the player scouting already done, it is known that the German has been tasked with rejuvenating an elderly and tiny squad in time for the upcoming season. Since David Moyes, the current manager, is nearing the end of his contract, I have long thought that Steidten was only biding his time this season.
The fact that Moyes signed Kalvin Phillips during the winter transfer window shows that he had the final say on player acquisitions. For a football director who ultimately hopes to develop and hire players as part of a long-term strategy for the team, that must have been a discouraging time.
Steidten’s job might be jeopardized by Julen Lopetegui’s hiring, as there are worries that he would look for work elsewhere if his power is reduced.
